A Reggio Emilia–Inspired Approach to Early Learning
At St. Joseph’s Preschool, we believe that preparing children for kindergarten begins with building a strong foundation of curiosity, confidence, independence, and a love of learning. Our curriculum and learning experiences are thoughtfully aligned with Virginia’s Early Learning and Development Standards, supporting the skills and knowledge children need for a successful transition to kindergarten and beyond.
We believe children are naturally curious, capable, and eager to explore the world around them. Our preschool provides a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment where children learn through meaningful relationships, hands-on experiences, play, exploration, and discovery.
Our program is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach and incorporates developmentally appropriate best practices in early childhood education. We view children as active participants in their learning and thoughtfully create classroom environments that encourage them to ask questions, investigate ideas, solve problems, express themselves, and make connections.
Learning Through Exploration
Our classrooms are thoughtfully designed with inviting spaces for dramatic play, literacy, blocks and construction, art, sensory exploration, STEM experiences, fine-motor development, and creative expression. Children are given opportunities to work independently, collaborate with their friends, and revisit ideas in meaningful ways.
Rather than simply completing activities, children are encouraged to explore the process of learning. Teachers observe children closely, listen to their ideas, and use their interests and questions to help guide future experiences.
Our hands-on curriculum gives children opportunities to:
- Explore and investigate through play and discovery
- Develop early literacy, math, science, and STEM foundations
- Build problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
- Strengthen fine- and gross-motor skills
- Develop confidence, independence, and creativity
- Build positive relationships and communication skills
- Recognize and express feelings
- Practice cooperation, kindness, respect, and responsibility
- Express their ideas through art, music, movement, language, and dramatic play
- Develop the foundational skills needed for kindergarten and future learning
Intentional Teaching & Child-Led Learning
We believe that children benefit from both freedom to explore and the security of a predictable routine. Each classroom follows a consistent daily rhythm that provides children with a sense of comfort, belonging, and confidence while still allowing flexibility for children’s interests and emerging discoveries.
Teachers intentionally plan experiences based on Virginia’s Early Learning and Development Standards, child development, observations, classroom conversations, and the individual interests and needs of the children. Plans may evolve as children ask new questions or become interested in new ideas.
This balance of intentional teaching and child-led exploration allows learning to feel meaningful and authentic while supporting the developmental foundations children need for kindergarten readiness.
Nurturing the Whole Child
At St. Joseph’s, we focus on the development of the whole child. We nurture children’s social, emotional, physical, cognitive, creative, and spiritual development while helping them develop the confidence and skills they need for their next steps in learning.
Most importantly, we want children to feel that they belong, their ideas matter, and they are capable of great things.
